So yesterday, I went with my friend to the local Pick N Pull to grab a carb for his AMC Eagle SX/4. While we were there, we ended up making a few observations.
2001-2005 PT Cruisers (the pre-facelift and decontenting years) had pretty damn good build quality. Everything felt better screwed together than my mom’s 06 Matrix, and certain parts felt more solid than the equivalent parts on my dad’s 2013 Sonata. The leather and suede seats on the Limited models were actually pretty nice, and the way the cargo cover folds out into a table is actually really useful for resting your toolbox on.
First generation Siennas are really miserable things to be in, and nobody gave a damn about ergonomics prior to the facelift.
Festivas are slightly roomier than Tempo Coupes.
Try removing any trim piece on an early Focus, and you will most likely break it.
The amount of sound deadening in an AMC Eagle is somewhat impressive for a small brand in the early 80s.
Think about it. A self service yard is like if Craigslist had an auto show. My local yard has over 1300 cars, and admission is $1. I’d seriously recommend taking an afternoon to go to your local self service yard and examine some of the disused cars that interest you. For a few bucks more, you can even take some emblems home with you!

I like buying parts to upgrade a hooptie. Good example I put a rear view mirror with auto darkening, map lights and compass in my friends 99 S10 pickup. I also collect clocks.

What kind of carb did your friend snag? (The Motorcraft 2100 swap really wakes those 258s up.)

He snagged a factory Carter 2 barrel that was rebuilt last year. Not bad for $40.

Have you seen Murilee Martin’s Junkyard Boogaloo boom box?

Mine started with his “Down On The Junkyard” series on TTAC. I still regret not grabbing an emblem off of the Fuego I found about two years ago.
